New Car Sales Rise Again

There has been another increase in the number of new cars sold in the UK for the 9th month in a row according to figures recently published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) for April 2023. This is good news for those working within the industry.

In April 2023 there were 132,990 new cars registered in the UK with this being an increase of 11.6% when compared with the 119,167 new cars sold in the same month last year. Of those sold in April 2023, 61,342 were for the private sector, 68,537 were for the fleet market and 3.111 for the business sector.

There were 56,885 new petrol cars sold in April 2023 compared to 54,633 new petrol cars sold in April 2022 – a rise of 4.1%. There were 5,825 new diesel cars sold in April 2023 compared to 6,725 new diesel cars sold in April 2022 – a fall of 13.4%. The number of electric/hybrid/battery powered new cars sold saw a significant rise in April 2023 compared to April last year.

The figures on a year to date basis to April 2023 also make for positive reading with 627,250 new cars registered compared to 536,727 new cars sold for the same period to April 2022. That is a rise of 16.9%.

There were 267,444 new petrol cars sold on a year to date basis to April 2023 compared to 232,402 new petrol cars sole for the same period last year – a rise of 15.1%. There were 25,477 new diesel cars sold for the year to date to April 2023 compared to 30,411 for the same period last year – a fall of 16.2%. There was a significant increase in the sale of new hybrid/electric/battery-powered cars between these periods.

3. Kia Sportage 3,073
4. Hyundai Tucson 2,911
5. Audi A3 2,548
