September Sees Increase In New Car Sales

Readers will be interested and no doubt pleased to hear that the number of new cars registered here in the UK in September 2022 went up by 4.6% when compared with September 2021. As you will no doubt be aware, September is when the new registration plates are issued (as well as in March).

In September 2022 the number of new cars sold in the UK amounted to 225,269 although it is worth noting that this was over 34% less than in September 2019.

Apparently, the number of new electric plug-in cars reached 1 million in September 2022 – a significant milestone. So far in 2022, according to figures published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of such new vehicles registered in the UK totalled 249,575 – almost a quarter of a million.

However, on a year to date basis to September 2022, the total number of new cars registered in the UK amounted to 1,208,368 compared to 1,316,614 for the same period to September 2021. That is a significant drop of 8.2%.

In September 2022 the number of new cars registered for the private market amounted to 116,165 compared to 120,560 in September 2021 – a drop of 3.6%. The private sector makes up for 51.6% of the market. The number of new cars sold for the fleet market amounted to 101,760 in September 2022 compared to 90,445 in September 2021 – a rise of 12.5%. The fleet sector made up for 45.2% of the market. The number of new cars registered for the business market amounted to 7,344 in September 2022 compared to 4,307 in September 2021- a rise of 70.5%. The business sector made up for 3.3% of the market.
