Speeding Is Significant Contributor To Deaths In Road Traffic Accidents

We all know that we should not break the speed limit whilst driving whether we are travelling through a built up area, on a country road or on the motorway. The penalty for being caught exceeding the speed limit varies but can lead to a fine, points on your driving license, a ban from driving, an increase in your car insurance premiums but it can also result in serious injury or death to one or more people.

According to some research carried out by Direct Line Car Insurance there were 97,256 casualties on roads due to motorists breaking the speed limit in the period from 2012 to 2016. Of those casualties, 15,525 resulted in serious injury and 2,101 resulted in deaths.

So, on what sort of roads here in the UK do these accidents caused by speeding take place? Well, 43% of accidents take place on A roads, 15% occur on B roads and some people may be surprised to read that only 4% of such accidents occur on motorways.

In which part of the UK does the largest percentage of all accidents due to speeding take place? Well, it is the South West at 16.2%. This is closely followed by the West Midlands at 16% with the East Midlands at 13.1%. You may find it interesting to read that London is the lowest at 7.5%. The average across Great Britain is 11.5%.

There are no doubt some people who accidentally go slightly above the speed limit but there will no doubt be some motorists who blatantly exceed the speed limit. There can be no excuses when this happens and offenders deserve to face the consequences as previously mentioned.

It really is not worth taking the risk of breaking the speed limit. If you were to seriously injure or kill someone you will probably never forget the incident. So, please make sure that you keep within the sped limit.
